Think you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?
I’m an example that you can.
Although I have a college degree in Communications, conflict and communication have been the most challenging skills for me to master throughout my career and in my personal relationships alike. Life happens in real time. We set goals, read books, network, choose the career path in life that we believe will be best. Yet, life is happening fast as we juggle family and careers. Many of us hit a wall. For me, the many times this has happened, I’ve been aware that something had to change so I’d reroute thinking that changing the workplace, industry or co-workers would be the solution. Pivoting is a great skill and I’m grateful I’ve been exposed to such a variety of industries and “jobs” but after all these years, I’ve realized the main issue has been communication.
While I absolutely love my role as a licensed massage therapist and solo business owner, I’ve come to realize that with the right mindset and communication tools, I likely could have been just as content and happy in many of those previous positions. I’ve learned that leaving a place isn’t always the answer (as long as it’s not toxic or truly the wrong career fit). I believe the better solution for most is to learn to communicate more effectively.
And communication is not just important at the workplace, it’s the foundation for creating a more connected and understanding society. The CEO of GrowthDay, Brendon Burchard says that “ we can’t change society without first changing ourselves”.
